MIP-3 alpha, or CCL20, is a member of the CC chemokine family. MIP-3 alpha is a ligand for CC chemokine receptor 6 (CCR6) and this interaction is responsible for the chemoattraction of immature dendritic cells (DC) and effector/memory T and B cells. Additionally, CCL20 plays a role in the function of mucosal lymphoid tissues by attracting lymphocytes and dendritic cells towards epithelial cells. MIP-3 alpha is expressed mainly in peripheral blood lymphocytes, lymph nodes, liver, appendix, and fetal lung tissue and is induced by LPS, TNF, IFN gamma, and other inflammatory mediators.
