The IL-6 receptor complex is made up of 2 subunits, IL-6R alpha (CD126) and the shared signaling receptor gp130. IL-6 first binds to the low-affinity IL-6R alpha, followed by association with gp130 which then transduces the signal. IL-6R alpha is expressed by many cells including fibroblasts, macrophages and T cells.
